Deputies saves man's life in Assumption Parish

PIERRE PART - A man is alive today due to the heroic efforts of a pair of sheriff's deputies in Assumption Parish.

Deputy Kelli Matherne was doing a routine patrol check on Lee Drive when she noticed a light shining in the bayou. The deputy said she first thought the light was coming from a boat, but she quickly realized the light was coming from a truck in the bayou with someone still inside.

"At that point the only thing going through my mind was getting him out and doing it safely," said Deputy Matherne.

Before jumping into the bayou, Deputy Matherne made a call on the radio to report the accident.

Five minutes later, Sergeant Bryan Guillot arrived on the scene to help.

"I had no doubts that she would do what she needed to do in the first place. She's been in situations before where she was the first officer on scene and she took control of the situation," said Sergeant Guillot.

The two deputies pulled the man to safety, and he was taken to the Assumption Community Hospital where he was treated.

Unfortunately for the truck's driver, he may not be completely out of the water. Authorities are waiting on the results of a toxicology report to determine if the man was drunk or not, and the incident remains under investigation.
