LIVINGSTON - Sheriff's deputies and first responders in Livingston Parish pulled an injured driver from their burning SUV today, just moments before the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames according to Louisiana State Police.

It happened after a wreck on I-12 East around 9:30 a.m. today near Livingston.

Investigators said James Dutschke, 27, of Baton Rouge hit the back of an 18-wheeler before running off the road and hitting a tree, catching his SUV on fire. Dutschke had non-life threatening injuries, but was trapped in the vehicle.

State Police said two Livingston Parish Sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene within minutes of the crash, and with the help of first responders pulled Dutschke from the SUV through its front windshield.

"These Deputies embraced that opportunity, faced danger head on, and ultimately saved this man's life," said State Police Superintendent Mike Edmonson. "They are to be commended for their heroic actions today."

News 2's Kristy Davis will have more on this dramatic rescue tonight at 10 p.m.
