Deputies investigate nursing home rape
BATON ROUGE - Deputies charged Daniel Melancon, 54, St. Amant, with raping a woman who suffers from diminished mental capacity.
The woman, in her 40's, is a patient at Jefferson Manor Nursing Home on Jefferson Highway.
Melancon entered the nursing home by using an employee code on the key pad, administrator Dave Rambo said.
The victim told detectives Melancon came into her room around 1:30 a.m., held her down and forced her to have sex. According to the arrest report, the victim told Melancon to stop but he told her to "be quiet. It's alright." She told deputies she was petrified and because of her weakened state she couldn't push the man off her.
"We continue to investigate what occurred on that particular evening," Rambo said. "But it is an allegation at this time that we take very serious."
Melancon did not work or live at the nursing home, but was a frequent visitor. The victim told authorities she recognized Melancon because he is her roommate's ex-boyfriend.
The victim's roommate was also in the room when the alleged incident occurred, but no one reported screams, said Rambo.
Video surveillance shows Melancon walking into and out of the room.
"I think it's important that we look at these safety and security measures," Rambo said. He added visiting hours have been changed.
Prior to the report, visitors were allowed after hours for convenience to patients and their family, Rambo said. Now, they will no longer be able to come and go at all hours of the night. Visitors coming at night will only be allowed through one door.
Also, the entry code has changed and security guards have been hired.
"Right now, our main focus is on systems, protection of our residents," Rambo said.
