Denham Springs spending more on roads

DENHAM SPRINGS - The city of Denham Springs plans to spend more than $1 million to improve a handful of roads.

That's roughly $340,000 more than the city spent on roadwork last year.

Plans to widen and overlay Maple Street account for about half the money. Contractors will add culverts and widen the road about three feet. This comes two years after a school bus crashed into a ditch on Maple Street.

"It's not that safe, I mean the big ditches are a problem and a concern," said resident Harry Stelly. "Right now, especially if you meet a school bus, it's tight."

Denham Springs also plans to add a U-turn behind the Albertson's grocery store, widen and overlay Julia Street and overlay Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and the north section of River Road toward Highway 16.

Denham Springs Mayor Gerard Landry says construction on the roads should start by the end of the year.
