Denham Springs could overhaul street signs

DENHAM SPRINGS - The city of Denham Springs could get a grant to replace 1,500 street signs in dire need of improvement.

That's if a $48,000 grant is approved through the state's local Governor's Assistance Program. City leaders say the reflective coating on street signs typically lasts around 8-10 years, but most of the signs in Denham Springs are 15-20 years old.

"The street signs we've had have been up there for some time. It's time for a little upgrade," said Mayor Gerard Landry.

If approved, Denham Springs plans to use the money to replace 1,500 street signs and posts throughout the city limits.

"Proper signage also takes care of any potential safety hazards we may have," said Landry. "People can't read a sign and they have to slow down, and also emergency response knowing that they're on the right street is a big plus."

Residents say it's tough to see the street signs at night, so getting new ones would give the Denham Springs a new look.

"That would be wonderful," said resident Carolyn Kennedy. "I think this would be great, and Denham Springs needs it."

City leaders expect to hear back from the program about the money in the next few months.
