Defense rests in Painter trial

BATON ROUGE - The case is coming to a close for Murphy Painter, the former top dog at a major state agency accused of illegally running background checks on people. The defense rested its case earlier today in the federal trial against the former commissioner of Louisiana Alcohol and Tobacco Control.

Painter walked out of the federal courthouse Wednesday afternoon, his fate still unknown. Painter faces up to 82 years in prison for allegedly using state and federal background databases illegally.

The defense called four witnesses Wednesday. One was a former high-ranking official with the ATC, who testified that several people had access to Painter's computer database password, as the defense tried to bring into question who actually ran the background checks on the individuals that Painter stands accused of.

The jury will hear closing arguments Thursday morning. Murphy is also accused of lying to federal investigators.
