Deedy Slaughter trial set to start this week

PORT ALLEN- The embattled former Mayor of Port Allen is scheduled to go to trial this week.

Deedy Slaughter was recalled from office last November after voters had enough. She ran for re-election this year, but was defeated by Richard Lee III.

The WBRZ Investigative Unit exposed her questionable actions first. It started with a trip to Washington D.C. that she billed taxpayers for, but could not prove that she conducted any city business. When WBRZ questioned her about it and obtained public records, Slaughter fired Chief Financial Officer Audrey McCain. A Judge quickly reinstated her, saying Slaughter did not have the authority to fire McCain.

On numerous occasions, Slaughter told WBRZ she met with Senator Landrieu to talk about bringing economic development to Port Allen. However, Landrieu did not recall ever having a meeting with Slaughter.

"I don't recall any specific thing we talked about," Landrieu told WBRZ in March of 2013.

Slaughter is set to go on trial for the following reasons:

-Allegations of retaliation after she fired Chief Financial Officer Audrey McCain

-Allegations Slaughter violated the State Whistleblower Statute

-Allegations Slaughter meddled in McCain's work

-Allegations of defamation

Stay with WBRZ for the most complete coverage of Slaughter's trial.  It begins Tuesday morning.
