Deceased identified in deputy-involved shooting
DENHAM SPRINGS - Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard posted a statement on his social media account Wednesday, asking for time in making a statement related to a deputy-involved shooting where a man died a day before.
Sidney Averett, 46, was shot and killed. Averett's name was released about an hour before Ard's statement by Louisiana State Police, who are handling the investigation. Neither agency has released any official information about who shot Averett and how the unidentified Livingston Parish Sheriff's deputy is involved.
Shortly after the shooting on Country Club Lane Tuesday afternoon, State Police said the deputy was off-duty and the gunfire was related to a domestic situation. The deputy, a woman and Averett were all at the house when the incident occurred. Reportedly, Averett came into the home and started shooting before he was shot.
Names of the two others involved have not been released.
"I am saddened and my heart goes out to all the families involved," Ard posted Wednesday. "I am aware of the public and the news media's requests for me to make comments on this matter. The state police investigation is not complete. The coroner's office will not conduct the autopsy until [Thursday]. I believe that my responsibility is to wait until the investigation is completed by those agencies before making a detailed statement or answering any questions."
"At that time, my statements and response to questions will be based upon all of the known facts. To respond prior to that time, would be premature."
