Deadly officer-involved shooting

Related Story

BATON ROUGE - The sheriff's office said a man had been drinking and was on a rampage when he was shot by officers after pointing a gun in their direction on Christmas Eve.

Gregory Sanders, 54, was shot when three deputies responded to complaints about his behavior at his home in the 16000 block of Pride-Baywood Road. Sanders pointed a gun at them when they arrived, investigators said.

"He walked out with a higher powered rifle. They repeatedly told him to put it down. He did not," Sheriff Sid Gautreaux told WBRZ reporter Mark Armstrong on the scene.

Earlier, the man threatened to hurt himself but it was unclear why he was so upset.

"We never see anything like this. It's just really shocking, especially on Christmas Eve," a neighbor said, watching the large investigative operation unfold in front of her.

"Murders are difficult to deal with and law enforcement involved shootings are even more complicated," District Attorney Hillar Moore said. "We recognize these cases need special attention and that is why we are here," he said.

The three deputies involved are on leave - a standard procedure when an officer is involved in a shooting.

No deputy was injured.
