Daycare workers arrested for death of child
BATON ROUGE - Police arrested two daycare workers in connection with the death of a toddler after they left the child in a vehicle.
According to Baton Rouge police, 47- year- old Shelia Newman and 26- year- old April Wright are both booked and charged with Negligent Homicide for death of 22 -month- old Angel Green.
Police said Newman was running an unlicensed daycare along Prescott Road. They said both women were working at the time and were transporting children to an off site facility for lunch. Police said when they arrived back to the daycare Newman and Wright were unloading the children for a nap. While the children were napping, Police said Wright left the daycare in the vehicle to pick up additional children.
Investigators said the daycare workers forgot to check to see if the vehicle was empty and left 22 month old Angel Green in the vehicle.
Police said after the children woke up from their naps that's when Newman and Wright realized that Green was missing. Police said once the women search the vehicle Green was located unresponsive.
Police said Newman instructed Wright to falsify her statements to police regarding the location where green was found. Newman is also charged with Obstruction of Justice.
Both woman were booked into East Baton Rouge parish prison.
