Damaged artwork under repair at Louisiana Capitol

BATON ROUGE- Rugged scaffolding now dominates the ornate aesthetics of Memorial Hall in the center of Louisiana's State Capitol. A delicate process is underway to repair small tears in the ceiling's mural.

"It's in very good condition actually," said artist Elise Grenier. After a quick climb to the top, she uses an adhesive made from the original ingredients to fasten the torn paint back in place.

"This is routine maintenance for a building this old," she said.

In the northwest corner, a section of the ceiling representing Louisiana Native Americans has damage visible from the floor. Grenier does not add new paint but preserves the existing artwork.

"This building is going to be here long after we're gone, it will be like the pyramids one day," she said. "It will be around forever so we want to conserve as much as possible."

The conservation work will take a few weeks at a cost of $2,200. Additional work is underway on the exterior of the 80-year-old building to restore its limestone shell.
