DA seeks to use past against accused birthday shooter
BATON ROUGE - A teenager accused of shooting up a birthday party could have his criminal past used against him.
Nakeydran Williams is accused of shooting and killing three teens and wounding another at the Baker Civic Club. Investigators say the survivor, Javaughn Simmons, was the intended target.
Williams was 16 at the time and faces trial for murder and attempted murder as an adult. Today in court the state asked for more time to present further criminal evidence against Williams, evidence the defense says won't be permitted because they're after the wrong guy.
"The District Attorney has not yet made it known what the evidence will be," said Defense Attorney Thomas D'Amico. "I can't imagine it would be relevant, I guess we'll have to wait and see."
"At this point it's better to let the evidence speak for itself at trial," said Assistant District Attorney Darwin Miller.
The judge will have to approve the motion to present further evidence before the next court date in August.
