Cyclist found in ditch by mail carrier
GONZALES - State Police said a mail carrier found 49-year-old Frank J. Bercegeay in a ditch this morning.
A bicycle lay next to Bercegeay who was found face-down, wearing a yellow reflective vest. Police believe the Prairieville man was killed by a hit-and-run driver in Ascension Parish.
The accident happened on LA 934 east of LA 44, which is north of Gonzales.
Sandifer said the cyclist was going east on LA 934 when he was hit.
Neighbors say the area is dangerous for cyclists.
"It's got a deep drop-off on all shoulders, and it's really dangerous for anybody biking, but they do it all the time," said Gerald Peno.
It is unknown at this time if Bercegeay was impaired, and toxicology results are pending an autopsy.
Troopers have been unable to determine what type of vehicle struck Bercegeay, and at what time, but believe that the vehicle will possibly have damage to the right side or to the right side mirror.
