Crews replace burned-out transformer in Morgan City
BATON ROUGE - After about 20 sweltering hours, the power is back on for most of Morgan City.
Thousands of residents lost power after the town's only substation exploded and caught fire last night. The substation's transformer was damaged enough that it needed to be replaced, leaving the city without power for most of the day.
Today workers were able to restart the old steam plant and route its power to people in Morgan City, restoring electricity to many residents.
Workers are still replacing the destroyed transformer, which would connect the city back to the local power grid. That work is estimated to be completed later tonight.
