Crawfish season could end early

BELLE RIVER- The crawfish season could end sooner than expected because of falling water levels in the Atchafalaya Basin.

Overnight, levels near Belle River dropped at least three inches, leaving just a few feet to fish.

"You got traps that you can't get to just to make it a good day, and if we don't get some water shortly we're gonna have to hang it up," said Bobby Taylor, who was moving his traps to deeper water.

The season usually lasts through June, but if it's cut short, fishermen could lose nearly $15,000.

"It's about over with in about a week, it'll be gone, we'll have to find something else to pay bills with," said Randy Henson, a crawfisherman.

Now lawmakers are trying to help out, by authoring a resolution that would allow the Army Corps of Engineers to divert at least six inches of water from the Mississippi River into the Basin.

Without the water, fishermen's profits will go down the drain.

"If it falls like this for the next five days, I'll be out of work here, It'll be over with," said Henson.
