Crack found in levee during routine check

BATON ROUGE- Army Corps of Engineer inspectors found a minor crack in the levee near the USS Kidd today during a routine inspection.

The inspection, part of the "Phase One Flood Fight," is triggered when the river reaches a certain level, but the Corps says it's no cause for concern.

"The point is to catch small problems before they get to be big problems, before the river stages get to the point where we can't react to them," said Mike Stack, Chief of Emergency Management with the US Army Corps of Engineers in New Orleans.

Inspectors logged the exact location of the crack so it can be repaired before rising water reaches it.

"Things like this are common, we'll get small cracks in the system and we'll get some repairs, but this is the point of having those trigger points, coming out here early and looking at what's going on, taking action, to make sure it doesn't become a problem," said Stack.

The Corps will pair up with the local levee district to make a temporary repair to the crack and then make a permanent fix when the river levels are lower.
