Councilwoman: BRAVE project shifting crime elsewhere

BATON ROUGE - One city leader believes a crack-down on crime is pushing the crooks into other areas of town.

"In the 70802, we seem to have seen an increase in crime," councilwoman Tara Wicker said. "The unfortunate thing is I don't know if it's shifted or it's just a matter of crime has expanded."

Wicker admits the BRAVE Project meant to rid Baton Rouge streets of gang violence is working, but with the heightened police attention in 70805, she thinks criminals are moving to other places.

BRAVE plans to expand their focus to other parts of the city with the help of a federal grant. But as to when that expanded focus will begin exactly, wicker isn't sure.

"Hopefully we'll be able to pull together a solid plan of action that would help this thing go on a decline as opposed to decreasing," she said.

She points to a string of robberies in South Baton Rouge early Friday morning to highlight her opinion.

Baton Rouge Police say around 1:00 a.m. three to four men went through neighborhoods on Nicholson Drive and Wyoming and robbed four people one after the other.
