MORGANZA - At a meeting Wednesday night with people who live near a flood control structure north of Baton Rouge, the Army Corps. of Engineers warned the floodgates may need to be opened.

The Corps. is watching river levels closely, and have already suggested it will open the floodgates further south near New Orleans, the Bonnet Carre, by the end of the week. At Morganza, officials estimate needing to open the gates no sooner than January 11th.

The Morganza was opened for the first time in 40 years in 2011 when the river reached record levels. The Morganza flood control structure was built in 1954 and has been opened only twice: in 2011 and 1973.
