BATON ROUGE - The coroner's office says an accused killer shot himself in the head during a Wednesday night shootout with police and U.S. Marshals deputies in Baton Rouge.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner's Office confirmed Thursday that 37-year-old Lawrence Blackburn, of Morgan City, was dead at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Baton Rouge Police and members of a U.S. Marshals task force tracked an armed Blackburn down at an apartment complex on West Brookstown Drive around 7:30 p.m.

Gunfire was exchanged between law enforcement and Blackburn. A woman was hit in the leg during the shootout, but she is expected to recover. Blackburn was also hit by bullets from law enforcement so the coroner's office performed an autopsy Thursday to confirm the exact cause of his death.

Blackburn was wanted on first-degree murder charges stemming from a shooting in Lafayette that left an 18-year-old dead and put another man in the hospital.

The Baton Rouge Police Department is leading the ongoing investigation following the shooting.
