Cool Schools: Pecan Grove Primary
GONZALES- Every 34 seconds a child under the age of 13 is involved in a crash, and more than a third of the children killed in car accidents were not wearing seat belts.
One of those victims was five-year-old Bryce Matthews from Gonzales, who passed away after an accident. Bryce's grandmother, Sharon Posey, who's a teacher at Pecan Grove Primary wanted to see a change. That's when the Dutchtown High School Beta Club, and the staff at Pecan Grove Primary started their "Sit, Strap, Save" campaign.
Karen Ahmad, an injury prevention nurse at Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital is helping with the campaign as well.
"Most people who come to me, who just want me to look at their car seats to make sure it's correctly installed, probably have three to seven things that are not optimal or mistakes," Ahmad told News 2's Kylie Dixon. "And certainly one of those may not lead to fatalities, but cumulatively they do add up."
One mother of three took advantage of the opportunity and stopped by the school to have her car seats checked.
"It made a world of a difference, because they showed me ways to get it more secure, and buckled down, and things I maybe needed to change," said Jessica Lemoine.
Posey hopes that this campaign continues for years to come, and inspires kids of all ages to make sure they're properly restrained in the car.
"You can't say that a car seat will or will not save a child, however if it's the proper child seat for the proper age and weight, it's going to help us save more and prevent tragedies," said Posey.
