Cool Schools: Dutchtown High School
BATON ROUGE - An English and creative writing teacher in Ascension Parish is being celebrated by her peers and students. Tamara Empson was named Teacher of the Year at Dutchtown High School.
"She is just so positive is someone you want to work with, you want to work around and...the kids want to be in her class," Principal Carli Francois told News 2's Kylie Dixon.
She was honored to be selected the school's top teacher by her fellow educators.
"Dutchtown is such a great school," Empson said. "I was overwhelmed. We have such great teachers here. It was a really nice thing."
One of the many activities in her classroom: a mock court. Her kids say they're interested in what they're learning because she comes up with out of the box ideas to keep them engaged.
"Ms. Empson teaches with such a high level of enthusiasm, and she intervenes with the kids who don't get it...and works harder with the kids who do," 10th grader Kayla Winey explains.
In addition to English, Ms. Empson also teaches creative writing. Take a look inside her classroom.
