Cool Schools: Donaldsonville High School

Related Story

DONALDSONVILLE - If you watched the Oscars Sunday night, you noticed plenty of political messages, including discrimination, bullying and violence. That same conversation is taking place everyday in an English class at Donaldsonville High School in Ascension Parish.

"CHANGE" is an acronym symbolic of Donaldsonville High students. It stands for: Creating Hope and Negotiation Genuine Equality.

"We talk about things dealing with equality," Donaldsonville High senior Essarah Hopkins explains. "A lot of times it has something to do...with racial discrimination going on. Things like Ferguson. We just wrote about thing we could do to make the situation better starting small, like in our community and our classrooms..."

The idea was created by teacher Leia Scott, who was looking for a way to engage students.

"We want to discuss everything happening in the world and happening in Louisiana specifically," she told News 2's Kylie Dixon.

After a positive reaction from the community, the program continues this semester with a new group of writers and teenagers looking to make the world a better place.

"Whatever is next is up to them," Ms. Scott says. "They are the leaders just like the leaders in the classroom last semester. It's time to step into those shoes and become the next leaders of this school."
