Cool Schools: Capitol Elementary Volunteer
BATON ROUGE- Shirlise Rivera is a law student that still finds time to tutor twice a week at Capitol Elementary. She's a part of the organization Volunteers in Public Schools, or VIPS, a group that recruits, trains, and places volunteers in schools to help children.
Capitol Elementary has had volunteers coming to the school for about five years.
"The teachers are commenting that they see remarkable improvements in their academics, as well as their self-confidence," says Mona Collins, the school's principal.
This is Shirlise's first year, she's been working with two girls on reading and math.
"We like to do subtracting and other activities that help me," says Doy-Lisha Caples, a 2nd grader at Capitol Elementary. "That's why she always makes me smile and do my work."
