Cool Schools: 7th Ward Elementary

Related Story

DENHAM SPRINGS - Our Cool School this week is a Livingston Parish school that's celebrating a big milestone this year. 7th Ward Elementary is celebrating 100 years of learning and memories.

When 7th Ward opened in 1915, the school had a principal and one teacher. It's now home to 350 students.

Leslie Ellis is the oldest living former principal. The anniversary is allowing him to relive his memories from 1966-1974.

"It was a great place to work because I was a young principal at the time," he told News 2's Kylie Dixon. "With no experience as a principal...I got my feet on the ground so to speak. It taught me more than I taught them..."

Generations of families have passed through the halls of 7th Ward. One of those is Patrick Harris, who was both a student and principal. His mother also served as principal in the 1950s.

"They had a pet day," he reminisced. "We probably had 200 pets. Everything from horses, milk cows, goats, chickens, snakes, (and) ducks. These were country kids."

As 7th Ward celebrates 100 years, the current principal is looking forward to a bright future ahead.

"I really hope this school lasts another hundred years," Stacey Milton explains. "This is a little slice of heaven in south Denham Springs."
