Constable's "top dog" headed to national competition

BATON ROUGE - A deputy constable in Baton Rouge and his K9 are headed to the U. S. Police Canine Association Competition next month.

John Lawton says it took complete dedication to get him and his partner, Ricardo, to this point.

"Ricardo stays with me constantly. He goes to work, he goes home, he's part of the family," Lawton said. "Probably one of the most pleasurable law enforcement jobs imaginable."

Ricardo works with both federal and local agencies through the Delta Narcotics Task Force and School Drug Task Force, as well as Baton Rouge City Court. All that action requires a rigorous training schedule for obedience, agility, evidence search and apprehension.

"Ricardo is trained on a regular basis," Lawton said. "We work on his patrol work and then with actual narcotics to maintain his certifications."

Lawton and Ricardo put on a show at last year's national canine competition in Maryland, and hope they'll ace this year's the same way they did last year's Jeremy Trish Narcotics Competition.

The U. S. Police Canine Association Competition is scheduled for the first week of October.
