Constable cleared in Southern student takedown

BATON ROUGE - Investigators today cleared a Baton Rouge city constable of any wrongdoing after an altercation with a student at Southern University which was caught on tape.

City Constable Reggie Brown said investigators felt Deputy Constable Anthony Collins didn't use excessive force when dealing with the student, Taikian Brooks, at last week's student registration.

"If you look at this individual, he was resisting, he was resisting after being advised he had two choices to make, cooperate, go sit in the bleachers or leave the facility," said Brown.

Video taken by witnesses showed Collins grabbing Brooks and "body-slamming" him, according to witnesses.

"The deputy was acting just as he was taught in the official subduing of an individual, no licks passed, no body slamming, it was what we would consider putting this person down so you could handcuff him," said Brown.

In a police report of the incident released Thursday, Collins said he'd encountered Brooks several times in several different lines. He said Brooks refused to do what he asked, and when he tried to escort him from the building the student resisted, leading Collins to take him to the ground and arrest him with assistance from other constables.

Brooks received a misdemeanor summons for resisting an officer and remaining after forbidden.
