BATON ROUGE - People who live in Old South Baton Rouge are calling a group of McKinley High School administrators heroes after an arson displaced seven people Tuesday.

"I guess it could have been a foolish thing," vice principal Dr. James Kador said about running in a burning home before firefighters arrived on the scene.

Kador, the McKinley High principal and another vice principal rushed toward flames coming from a home near the high school on East Johnson Street.

Three houses burned in the inferno that was started by an arsonist.  The flames destroyed the house that was set on fire, a second home next door and a third house down the block where embers sparked a fire on the porch.

An elderly woman and six other people lived in the second home that caught on fire. Kador sprinted two blocks toward the woman's burning building and jumped into action when he saw neighbors pulling her out.

"It was an elderly lady so I figured there would be someone elderly in the house so I ran in," Kador said.

He ran inside in a full suit just moments before the house went up in flames, checking every room to make sure everyone got out before fire crews arrived.

"Whoever set the fire at the abandoned house, I pray that God would deliver them and bless them to grow up," the woman's daughter Deborah Wright said.

"That is very cowardly to do such a thing to someone that doesn't bother anybody on this street; that has lived here so long," the victim's niece, Serita Wilson, said.

The 83-year-old woman who had to be rescued suffers from dementia, according to her family.  She will spend the next few days in a hotel, courtesy of the Red Cross.  The woman does have insurance, family members said.

As crews left the scene, Kador went about the rest of his day.

"It was something I think a lot of people probably would do in that situation. I figure being a hero is something...everyone would have a chance to be so it was my turn," Kador said.
