Commission says 7 parts of East Baton Rouge are "food deserts"

BATON ROUGE- Thousands in Baton Rouge are living in poverty and miles from stores where they fresh produce according to the Food Access Policy Commission.

The newly formed group says seven areas in East Baton Rouge live in what it calls food deserts.

"It's never anything quick. I have to wait for people to take me to the store on the other side of town, " says Scotlandville resident Gwendolyn Robinson.

The Food Access Policy Commission says more than 75,000 people in East Baton Rouge Parish live in food deserts. Almost half live in poverty and nearly 17,000 are children.

"Our challenge now is to understand that and try to figure out what area the new opportunities," says commission member Dr. Adele Givens.

The commission says it will spend the rest of the year examining those food deserts. Many who live in the area say they can't wait to see the results.

"There's an abundance of corner stores, liquor stores, and gas stations that pose as grocery stores, so therefore people are exposed to a lower quality," says Vernard Henley.
