Collins not at Thursday's draft
CHICAGO - La'el Collins was not among the rookies who were welcomed to the NFL Draft ahead of the official start of the ceremony Thursday night.
Collins, it is believed, skipped the show in an effort to meet with police in Baton Rouge concerning a murder investigation. A woman Collins knows was killed and investigators said they wanted to talk to Collins about the woman.
Collins, who has not been labeled a suspect or charged with any crime, has not been seen publicly recently. Wednesday, his agent said he had hired a lawyer and was going to meet with police to clear his name before the draft. Thursday, police said they were not planning to talk to him until after the draft.
The draft began at 7 p.m. local time.
Collins was not one of the first 21, first-round picks. Analysts expected him to be selected in the second-half of the selection Thursday.
The Saints, who reportedly were interested in Collins, made the team's first selection, 13, by choosing Stanford offensive tackle Andrus Peat.
