City tears down blighted property

BATON ROUGE - City workers tore down a dilapidated Baton Rouge home today after getting a court order allowing them to remove the blighted structure.

David Guillory with the Department of Public Works said it belonged to David Burke, who's been in jail a year awaiting trial for more than 100 charges of child pornography.

The city ruled the home was a hazard to the public, and today demolished the structure.

Neighbors said they plan a celebration for what they referred to as "the porn house," but admitted the outcome is bittersweet.

"I think as a community, we kind of failed our neighbor," said Chris Gearheart, who lives nearby. "We saw that there was a problem a long time ago, but we never really did anything to help him out. And in this day in age of mental illness, we need to step forward and help people in the community so it doesn't have to end up like this."

The property will likely go up for auction in a few months.
