Church, neighbors extend olive branch

WALKER - Ahead of a protest over a planned cemetery near a neighborhood in unincorporated Livingston Parish, homeowners and leaders of a nearby church exchanged an olive branch.

A protest had been planned for Wednesday evening since people were upset about the plans for a graveyard just north of Walker on Walker Road North.

"We are against a cemetery being put at the beginning of our street," said Becky Forbes.

Shady Bower Church agreed to meet with the residents of Joycelynn Road and resolve the matter in a way that's agreeable to both parties.

The residents are concerned about a plot of land at the corner of Joycelynn Road and Walker Road North. The piece of land is a short distance from front yards and residents say that's not the view they envisioned.

"We're just really here to ask them to consider putting the cemetery in a different place," said Forbes.

All but one of the 21 homeowners in the subdivision signed a petition against the cemetery. The people are upset over how things were handled and say they had to find out from a team of people surveying the land two weeks ago.

"One day we were driving down the street going home and they were cutting down branches, they were surveying the land and we just went and asked.  They said that they were planning on putting a cemetery there," said Forbes.

A meeting date to discuss the matter, has not been set.
