Cheating allegations raise concerns for BESE

BATON ROUGE - A BESE representative is upset after what they said was lack of communication over allegations of cheating at East Baton Rouge Schools.

Lottie Beebe says she was highly disturbed to find out the East Baton Rouge School System is being investigated for allegations of cheating on tests from a television interview. As a member of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education, she says this information needs to come to them from State Superintendent John White.

EBR is under investigation by the state into discrepancies with graduation records and cheating on on-line tests. Beebe says the state board needs to know what's going on any time a school or district is investigated.

"The greatest concern is that communication is lacking among all board members and Superintendent John White. He needs to do a better job of effectively communicating with the board," said Beebe.

Beebe says with today's technology, White can easily communicate better with the state board.

"When we're informed we immediately proceed to investigate," she continued.

Now Beebe wants to know how online classes are being monitored across the state, to keep students from cheating.

BESE members, along with some state lawmakers and others, will address more issues involving the East Baton Rouge School System Wednesday.
