Charges could be filed against people who haven't paid bills
SORRENTO - Delinquent water, sewer and trash customers in Sorrento could go to jail if they don't pay what they owe.
It's the plan from the city council after discovering more than $11,000 in back bills where the people were still receiving services.
"We have video, pictures from several citizens that show people have been stealing services so we told the chief to look at them," said City Councilman Randy Anny. "Misdemeanors under $500, anything over $500 will be charged as a felony."
"We are going to move forward with this because this is a serious problem," said Sorrento Police Chief Earl Theriot. "If someone is stealing services we are going to go after them."
Theriot plans to start the investigation Wednesday.
Tuesday, only about $900 of the $11,000 has been paid.
