Changes coming to accident hot zone

CENTRAL - Changes are coming to an intersection notorious for wrecks in Central.

The state has come up with a solution they believe will stop the repetitive problem at Greenwell Springs and Sullivan Road, by changing the eastbound left turn signal on Greenwell Springs Road. Currently, the light allows drivers to turn left with the green light or when the arrow appears. DOTD will change the configuration to a left-turn only when the arrow appears, to make it safer on those drivers.

"The main thing is people taking a let turn," said Lynn Ross, who owns a business near the intersection. "They can't judge the people coming toward them."

At times cars making that left turn onto Sullivan gamble with on-coming traffic at 45 mph.

"We've seen several cars flip upside down," said Ross.

A wreck last year tangled up a DEMCO truck, an ice cream truck and a school bus when all three of them had a green light. The DEMCO truck was making a left turn but failed to yield, hitting the other two.

"A lot of these wrecks are caused by people not paying attention," said Central Chief Administrative Officer David Barrow.

Weather permitting, the signal change is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
