Central councilman gets thumbs-up to run

BATON ROUGE- A judge decided that Ralph Washington is still eligible to run for Central City Council, despite a mistake on his candidacy form that claimed he didn't have any ethics fines.

Washington did owe $700 to the Ethics Commission for previous late filings, but had requested a waiver for the fines in 2012.

The judge said that because the Board of Ethics did not respond to Washington, it was not his fault that he filed the candidacy forms incorrectly.

Washington also paid the $700 fine prior to the hearing, but after he filed to run.

"$700 is not a large amount of money to make payment on, I was just waiting on them to respond and tell me whether the waiver process went through or exactly how much I had to pay," Washington told News 2.

Now some voters in Central are excited to have their current Mayor Pro-tem back on the ballot.

"Ralph is representing the people and that's what we need in Central, people who represent the people, it's a community for the people and not the individual and we need Ralph in there because he's always been fair for the people," said Gil Matherne, a supporter of Washington.

The election will be held on April 5. Five people will be selected for city council out of 11 candidates running for the job.
