Cat Island back open after shutdown

ST. FRANCISVILLE - Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge is open again after being closed during the 16-day government shutdown.

Hunters finally got the chance to get back to the outdoors Thursday in the refuge near St. Francisville. Larry Davis, an area hunter, says he couldn't wait to see the gate open when he heard the government shutdown was over.

"When I saw that gate open I had to take a ride back there and look around, cause it's been a while since I've been back there," he said. "I'm going squirrel hunting in the morning. Early, daylight... I'll be down here."

Davis says the time spent locked out of the refuge was tough.

"It was miserable, I mean miserable. There was no where to go, and you don't have anywhere to hunt around here if you aren't on a lease. This is really the only place we got to hunt," he said.

Cat Island offers 9,623 acres for hunting, fishing and hiking. The refuge is run by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
