CAA funding up for debate at Metro Council

BATON ROUGE - The Companion Animal Alliance is in line to get more than $500,000 for shelter operations, but first Metro Council members want CAA to answer to allegations of mismanagement and abuse of animals.

East Baton rouge Animal Control and Rescue said they've heard several allegations of abuse over the past few months. A couple weeks ago they received a formal complaint and turned over to metro council.

"We saw some real bad pictures of animals that weren't taken care of," says Metro Councilman Mike Walker. Walker says, he was told animals are euthanized too frequently, not receiving medical treatment, and over crowded.

The current director of the CAA, Kimberly Sherlaw, denies the allegations and says she is doing the best she can with the resources she has to work with.

"They need help. Just how much the council will determine, but they need help and council is willing to help them." Says Walker.

CAA is a non-profit organization.
