'Butt naked bandit' caught

BATON ROUGE- You can file this one under the world's dumbest criminal. This week, investigators say Shane Fleming broke into a home that was under construction and took a camera that was inside the house. The camera had cellular capabilities and led detectives right to him.
That camera was placed there after the builder was having problems with items turning up missing. Well, the camera Fleming took was a high tech deer camera. The camera was motion activated and sending pictures of the thief to the builder, and pinging in its exact location which led Baton Rouge Police right to him.
Some of the pictures the builder received were of the thief in the buff.
"He was butt naked, and we call him the "butt naked bandit" and was caught by the deer camera," Contractor Michael Shephard said.
Fleming recently celebrated his 46th birthday Monday. Two days later, he got a free trip to jail and picture from a different camera. This time it was at parish prison.
"You never know who's watching," Shephard said. "There's cameras everywhere. Everybody has a camera, deer cameras. Technology is crazy. You never know who is looking. You may want to do the right thing and not break into people's houses."
Toni Guercio and her husband just moved in to the new subdivision. She recalls seeing plenty of law enforcement activity when the house next door was burglarized.
"I woke up around three or four o'clock in the morning and saw police cars, Guercio said. "I walked up to them and said what's the matter... they said someone broke into that house over there."
The builder tells us following the break in one of the burglars flooded the house that was nearly complete. That caused at least $60,000 of damage. As Guercio reflects on what one man was capable of doing, she's happy the good guys managed to outsmart the criminal this time.
"I just think that's an evil doer," Guercio said. "To take advantage of someone like that I think it's terrible. I've been going mass everyday this week. They've been having evil doers there everyday. When you do evil you going but one place."
The developer of the subdivision released the following statement:
"We are thrilled to see a happy, albeit unusual, ending to a common problem at construction sites across the city. As a residential developer, our priority is safeguarding our residents and their property. We are happy our security measures and the ingenuity of the builder helped authorities capture the suspect and return the stolen property to its rightful owner."
According to affidavits, law enforcement found other stolen items from multiple different properties inside Fleming's home. He faces multiple counts of burglary.
