Building boom underway in southeastern portion of EBR Parish

BATON ROUGE- A building boom of sorts is underway in the southeastern portion of East Baton Rouge Parish.

Along Hoo Shoo Too Road, at least four brand new subdivisions are in the beginning phases of taking shape. With that construction comes concerns about flooding and traffic. The area was heavily impacted by the flooding in August of 2016. Much of East Baton Rouge Parish drains into that area, and with more water being displaced from rural land, everyone agrees that water will have to go somewhere during the next big rain event.

"There is a potential for a lot greater flooding," EBR Metro Councilman Buddy Amoroso said. "You have to look at that area and how it drains water."

Marcus Turner lives in the area and remembers what the flood of 2016 did.

"You couldn't see the stop signs," Turner recalled. "It was terrible. It was a rough time for us around here. There was no getting in and out of the subdivision."

Along Hoo Shoo Too Road, several brand new subdivisions are taking shape:  Woodland Cove, Manchac Reserve, The Sanctuary, and The Landing.

With all that building, Amoroso proposed a moratorium on building until enhancements to the parish's building code could be made. The Metro Council turned down that moratorium.

"You have to be concerned about what happens to your neighbor, and we have to do a better job of putting in regulations to make Baton Rouge a safe place to live, not just for new subdivisions...but old ones too," Amoroso said.

In addition to the flooding concerns, traffic is also a worry. This year the Metro Council turned down Mayor Sharon Weston Broome's proposal for better roads. One of the roads on her list was Hoo Shoo Too Road. It's unclear now if or when anything will be done to alleviate traffic in the area as the additional subdivisions crop up.
