BRPD trying to interview LSU football star in murder investigation

BATON ROUGE - Police confirmed to News 2 Tuesday that they're trying to interview LSU football standout La'el Collins in connection with the shooting death of a pregnant woman in Baton Rouge.

Police said 29-year-old Brittney Mills was shot and killed Friday night at her residence on Ship Drive. Detectives said they believe Collins and Mills had a relationship in the past, and aren't trying to question him as a suspect.

"Right now we would like to interview him," said Lt. Jonnie Dunham with Baton Rouge Police.

Collins is in Chicago for the NFL Draft, where he's projected to be a possible first-round draft pick. Police said they've spoken to his agent twice and his attorney, but haven't been able to directly interview Collins.

Police said on Friday night a man came to Mills' door and knocked, asking to use her car. When she refused, police said the man shot and killed her.

Investigators said Mills was nine months pregnant at the time. Doctors were able to save her child.

Neighbors told News 2 that Mills was always cautious about people who came around her home.

"It was definitely an assassination by somebody that she knew," said one neighbor. "She would always peek through the window even when I would be down there or ring the doorbell."

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Baton Rouge Police.
