BRPD officer clings to car as suspect drives off
BATON ROUGE - A Baton Rouge Police officer is recovering after he was dragged down O'Neal Lane as he tried to stop a suspect from fleeing.
The officer noticed a suspicious car parked behind a bank on O'Neal. He followed the suspect to a nearby gas station to question him.
When he got out of his unit, the suspect "could not give an explanation as to why he was behind the bank. He was acting very nervous, very suspicious. And that's when the officer noticed illegal drugs inside the vehicle," Cpl. Tommy Stubbs said.
The suspect started his car and took off while the officer trying to subdue the suspect.
Police said he eventually let go and ran back to his unit to chase the suspect, but couldn't find him again.
The search led to a motel on Florida Boulevard near Stevendale Road where dozens of investigators responded to assist in the search.
The officer was treated as the scene by EMS then brought to a hospital.
"Some tests are being ran. He has moderate injuries but mostly bumps, bruises, and scratches," Stubbs said.
