BREC needs your help to improve capitol area parks

BATON ROUGE - The Recreation and Park Commission for the Parish of East Baon Rouge, or BREC, unveiled its new 10 year plan, "Imagine your Parks 2" Wednesday at Independence Park Theater.

The plan piggybacks off the original "Imagine your Parks" that was created in 2004. Taxpayers gave BREC $70 million for "Imagine your Parks" to build new parks, updated community areas and several new facilities.

BREC hopes this new plan will add and enhance what has already been completed.

"Now that's about to come to an end," said Cheryl Michelet with BREC. "And a new strategic plan will take it's place for what we'll do to continue the progress."

They've mapped out the next decade and asked the public to take a look at the new ideas during a public meeting Wednesday.

"There's all kinds of ideas that we have," Michelet said. "Now we work with the public, asking, what would you like?"

Michelet says public opinion is critical during their planning stages.

"If we don't take the pulse of the community we can go out there, and renovate, and build new parks," Michelet said. "But if people aren't using them, then we didn't do the right thing."

BREC will begin putting the new plan into action January, and it will last until 2024.
