Breaking: Gonzales Police shoot suspected robber
GONZALES - Investigators said an armed robbery suspect shot in a confrontation with Gonzales Police is in critical but stable condition, and expected to survive.
Sgt. Steven Nethken said Daniel West, 33, was shot through the neck Sunday night by Sgt. Gary Ferrari, an 11-year veteran of the force, after West turned on pursuing officers while still armed with a handgun.
Investigators said West held up a Gonzales pizza place and fled after stealing an employee's vehicle. Police chased him before they said West ditched the car and took off on foot, and it was during the foot chase that the shooting happened.
Police said they recovered a pistol from West after the shooting, and that he has an extensive criminal record. Once West leaves the hospital Nethken said he'll be arrested on charges of armed robbery, vehicle theft and aggravated flight from an officer.
Nethken said Sgt. Ferrari is on paid leave pending a department investigation into the shooting.
