BR video game developer seeks funding
BATON ROUGE - An independent video game developer in Baton Rouge has a few days left to raise money for his game.
In the game "Nefarious" you're not the hero. Instead, you play a villain dead set on kidnapping the princess and keeping her away from the hero. The game was created by Josh Hano who uses the Louisiana Technology Park's Level Up Lab to build the game.
"You're not the little guy trying to get at the big guy who's like taking up the entire screen," said Hano. "You are the guy taking up the entire screen, and you're trying to squish a little guy who's jumping around and trying to hit your flashing weak point."
Hano began a Kickstarter campaign online to raise $50,000 to fund the game development. Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects to raise money from people who back ideas.
Hano has raised more than $31,000 so far with just three days left on the campaign. The money would go toward hiring a game programmer and would allow Hano to work on the game full-time.
"I'm more than willing to work for free just because it's a project of passion for me, but I really think to really get the quality that I'm looking for I have to be able to work on it full-time," he said.
More than 800 people have backed "Nefarious" on Kickstarter by donating money. If enough money is raised to further game development Hano says he's aiming to release "Nefarious" on PC, Mac, Linux and Wii U.
"It's actually been a really great feeling. People message me all the time telling me 'I love your idea. It's so cool and original.' It just feels great," he said. "I try to always have a lot of back and forth with the fans and talk to them and answer their questions. It's really blown me away."
