BR neighborhood wants street lights
BATON ROUGE - The Burbank Gardens subdivision wants street lights installed to increase security and city leaders approved the group's request for the lights Wednesday evening.
The neighborhood is located just off Burbank Drive near Gardere Lane. Right now the four street subdivision goes pitch black at night.
"We see that definitely as a safety issue. The installation of the street lights definitely will give us more security," said resident Rosemary Jackson. "We just want to feel a degree of safety, and we believe that the installation of the street lights will go a long way toward us feeling safe in this neighborhood."
The Baton Rouge Metro Council decided to amend the consolidated street lighting district to include the Burbank Gardens subdivision in its boundaries. The South Burbank Crime Prevention District plans to put up more than $100,000 to pay for installing the light poles, according to Jackson.
"We are hopeful that we get a favorable vote, you know, on this. I don't see any issues that would prevent us from not having a favorable vote." said Jackson.
Homeowners would foot the bill on annual property taxes to pay for maintenance of the light poles. Jackson says the lights will be installed sometime next year.
