BR football coaches waiting out referee pay debate

BATON ROUGE - With the upcoming high school football season in limbo, head coaches around the Baton Rouge region are watching closely.

Many referees say they won't work without a contract and pay raises. The Louisiana High School Athletic Association said schools can't agree to contracts with the Louisiana High School Officials Association, because it would violate the handbook.

Right now, all referees, except ones in Lake Charles, plan to skip the season. However, high school coaches are playing things by ear and focusing on the X's and O's.

"I do feel for the officials. I know that's an extremely difficult job," said St. Amant Head Coach David Oliver. "You know that's kind of above my pay grade. I'm just getting ready like we're gonna play like usual."

"I think there's going to be a football season. I just believe that, and we're just under the attitude that we're going to prepare for it and we're going to be ready to go," said Catholic High Head Coach Dale Weiner.

LHSAA and LHSOA plan to meet this weekend to negotiate a resolution.
