Boyfriend emotional after arrest in pregnant woman\'s death
BATON ROUGE - Police arrested the boyfriend of a pregnant woman after she was shot and killed earlier today in Baton Rouge. He was emotional and proclaimed his innocence as he was escorted into a police car bound for Parish Prison.
Police said investigators arrested Adam Sterling. He was charged with second degree murder, feticide, illegal use of a weapon and being a felon with a weapon.
Cpl. L'Jean McKneely said Sterling shot his girlfriend, 21-year-old Shylah Hicks, multiple times outside her home on Madison Ave. just before noon. Police said she was five weeks pregnant, and the unborn child died as well.
Sterling was very emotional as he was escorted to a waiting police car.
"I'm innocent," he said. "I loved my baby's mama."
However, friends of Hicks told News 2 they were in the process of taking her to a battered woman's shelter.
"She was going through domestic abuse and tried to leave him yesterday," Hicks friend, Ledidra Bell said. "She came over to my little sister's home, we wanted to take her to a shelter this morning. Before they could leave, he came over and they were talking and everybody else went in the house and he shot her."
Today they questioned whether they did enough to prevent the murder.
"It was just yesterday she had came in, she needed somewhere to go," Kimberly Carter said. "He fought her yesterday."
Others who also knew Hicks also wondered if they did enough. Hicks used to live with Linda Rogers, a neighbor in the area.
"Might could have saved this by keeping her at my house," Rogers said.
Sterling had recently been released from jail on domestic abuse charges in East Baton Rouge Parish.
News 2 pulled his court record. We found he had a long rap sheet, but several aliases, making it tough to pinpoint all of his exact charges.
