BATON ROUGE - One 10-year-old is being called a hero after he spotted a 7-year-old girl unresponsive at the bottom of the pool.
Shane Blanchard Jr. could hardly wait to jump in to try to escape the heat. But what he saw, was a young girl laying at the bottom of pool.
"I thought she was playing until l looked closer and she wasn't moving. .. just like laying down like you're in a bed," said Blanchard as he was describing the victim.
Shane Blanchard Sr. told News 2 he was busy with his 3-month-old when his son told him someone needs help now.
"I could hardly see the individual in the pool, so we walked on the on the other side of the pool," said Blanchard's dad. "That's when I noticed that it was actually a child in the water lying at the bottom of the pool."
When Shane Sr. yelled for help, others around the pool jumped in to rescue the little girl. They performed CPR until EMS arrived.
"I was really concern she was under there for a while because from him telling me to when I went over there, and saw her it was a good three to four minutes," said Blanchard Sr. "I'm very happy and proud of him."
"I just really hope that she gets better in the hospital," said Shane, who's hoping to meet the girl one day.
The near drowning happened Saturday at an apartment complex on Nicholson and Gardere.
Witnesses said about two dozen people mostly children were at the pool. The sheriff's office investigated the incident and ruled it an accident.
