Bowling Congress tournaments return to Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE - The United States Bowling Congress announced they will return to Baton Rouge.

The city will play host to the Women's Championships in 2017, and host the Open Championships again in 2025.

East Baton Rouge Parish saw an estimated $113 million economic impact when they hosted the USBC Open Championships in 2012, according to a study. Around 60,000 bowlers and their families stayed in Baton Rouge during the several months when the championships were held.

Local bowlers are thrilled to have the championships return to the Capital City.

"Excitement, pure excitement and I think we're gonna all feel that way, we've taken part in it in the past when the nationals have been here and I know we'll support it again," said Sylvia Moore, an avid bowler.

The economic impact of the 2012 tournament was easily felt by downtown businesses.

"It was a great group of people that were coming in from all over the country. We were constantly seeing new faces coming in from all over the country and enjoying Baton Rouge, you know we definitely had a great surge of business from it," said Ryan Fairman, manager at Lucy's Retired Surfer Bar.

Baton Rouge got a bargain on the women's tournament. Reports show Mobile, Al. bid $800,000 for the women's tournament, compared to the $500,000 Baton Rouge offered for the 2017 event. In all, Baton Rouge will put up betwen $1.5 million and $2.1 million for both events, some of that money will be offset by corporate sponsorships.

The USBC Open Championships will next head to the Oncenter Convention Center in Syracuse, N.Y., in 2018. USBC Executive Director Stu Upson said they think bowlers will be happy with the choices in host cities.

"Syracuse and Baton Rouge have been great partner cities, and we are thrilled to have the event visit these regions once again," he said today.
