Bonfires burn on levee

Related Story

LUTCHER - The lighting of bonfires went off without a hitch Christmas Eve, despite threats of inclement weather.

One by one, the bonfires were set fire to by torch at 7 p.m. Surrounding the bonfires, fireworks lit the night sky.

The 200-year-old tradition in St. James and St. John Parishes is kept alive by people like Dustin Montelius, who has been building bonfires with his family since he was old enough to carry logs up the levee.

"We've got a large group of people," said Montelius. "It takes a lot to get a 20 ft. bonfire like that up that high."

Visitors flock from all over the country to see the bonfires. This is Lynn Bryant's first time visiting Lutcher She says she's never seen anything like the lighting of the bonfires in her life.

"It's a very wild Christmas tradition," said Bryant. "I understand it's to help Santa find his way. I think y'all have done the trick."
